Like the whole agricultural sector, the dairy sector is also dominated by family based household farms which mainly
produce for own consumption and sell the surplus of milk in the market or to milk collection centers.
According to 2006 statistics of the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture 1.1 million farms are registered to keep dairy
cows out of which 93 % are keeping 2 cows or less. Only 164 farms have more than 100 cows.

In 2006: 1.7 million cows are registered out of which 75.7 % are kept on farms with 1 to 2 cows, 2% of the animals (34.300 cows)
are kept on farms with more than 100 animals.
