Ministry of Agriculture to focus on the agri-food sector's restructuring - January 20th, 2010

Restructuring the farming and food sector is one of long-term objectives of the Ministry of Agriculture headed by the new Minister Mihail Dumitru. "Romania has a country-specificity of the agricultural and food sector, as it has four million small subsistence farms and about 20,000 large commercial companies, with nothing in between due to this dual agricultural structure. My goal is to help develop family commercial farms, so as to fill in this gap," Mihail Dumitru said during his hearing in the Parliament committees which approved him as Minister.

He stressed that as many as possible subsistence farms need to be converted into commercial family farms. "The transformation of subsistence farms into commercial family farms and providing secure incomes for people in rural areas and farmers is one of my major long-term objectives that aims at restructuring the agricultural and food sector," said Dumitru.

According to the cited source, Romania is the country with the largest active rural population in the European Union, accounting for more than 45%, and therefore alternative income sources need to be found.
