92% of SAPARD funds absorbed over 2000-2006 - May 30, 2009

The status of the projects developed in the agricultural and rural development field - financed by European pre-accession funds - was presented on March 31 by the representatives of the relevant ministry at the meeting of the inter-ministerial committee on European fund management.

According to a government press release, the SAPARD programme was allocated nearly EUR 1.5 billion over 2000-2006. The data made public by the Ministry of Agriculture show that some 6,500 projects have been submitted within the SAPARD programme, of which as many as 4,544 have been subsequently contracted, with a value of EUR 1.4752 billion, resulting in a 92% absorption rate. Last year, some EUR 109 million have been granted from the state budget for financing some SAPARD the financing of which had been blocked by the EU.

In this respect, the Romanian authorities must meet some requirements and submit additional information to the European experts in order to defreeze these funds. Prime Minister Emil Boc asked the Public Finance Ministry to submit to the European officials all the necessary documents by April 25, so that the amount of EUR 109 million could be unfrozen as soon as possible.
