Promotions and warm weather to revive dairy market - June 26, 2009
The change in consumption habits back to basic products or to those with lower weight generated a 20-percent decline in the volume of dairy product sales in the first three months of this year, according to representatives of the Dairy Industry Business Owners Association (APRIL) cited by the daily Ziarul financiar.
However, the leading producers in the dairy industry - FrieslandCampina Romania, Danone Romania, Tnuva Romania and Albalact - expect sales to resume their growth rate after the Easter holidays and target a 5 to 10 percent increase by the end of this year, to around 1.1 billion euros.
Ioan Darzu, APRIL president, pointed out that prices would not increase this year; however, producers say the price evolution will be influenced especially by the cost of the raw materials.
As regards the overall evolution of the dairy industry this year, following stagnating or slumping sales in the first months, producers predict a 2009 market growth of 7 percent lower than the one recorded in 2008.
