Extra funds for Romanian farmers - July 21, 2009

Romanian farmers might receive EUR 35 more as area subsidy, in spring or in autumn at the latest, Minister of Agriculture, Forests and Rural Development Ilie Sarbu told Agerpres. 'EU Commissioner for Agriculture Mariann Fischer Boel agreed to our decision to increase by EUR 35 the farmers' subsidies per area from Romania's own budget or even from the funds for certain measures which are part of the National Rural Development Programme.

"Following an analysis we and the ministerial officials are to conduct, we will decide whether we can pay the subsidies starting in spring or autumn', Minister Sarbu stressed. The hardships the Romanian farmers have been facing due to the economic crisis and the rise in input prices and the expensive loan system are the main reasons why the subsidy increase was requested to be paid from the state budget.

At present, the annual subsidy per hectare is worth EUR 107, payable from EU funds (approximately EUR 60 per ha) and from the state budget (approximately EUR 47 per ha), and over 1.25 million farmers are granted such subsides.
