Romania absorbed just 4 pct of EU funding earmarked for rural development - August 3, 2009

Less than four percent of the EU funding assigned for rural development, specifically 68.5 million euros from the 2008 financial allocation of approximately 1.82 billion euros, had been absorbed by the 18th of June 2009, shows the data provided by the Paying Agency for Rural Development and Fisheries (APDRP).

On the same date, there were 744 APDRP-approved applications for payment on seven rural development measures and two state aid schemes. The largest amount was attracted by projects submitted for Measure 121 "Modernization of agricultural holdings," specifically 60.7 million lei (17.49 percent), whilst the financial allocation for this measure was more than 347 million euros.

A total of 3,581 projects were submitted, but only 847 contracts have been signed for Measure 121. Seven rural development measures were opened so far (plus two state aid schemes), but payments were performed for just 744 projects submitted for four measures.

As many as 6,893 projects worth a total of 5.01 billion euros have been filed for the six rural development measures launched in 2008. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development (MAPDR) will launch in the coming period new rural development measures and will also open new sessions for the already introduced measures; all measures in the programme will be opened by the end of the year.
