Support for mountain farmers - October 12th, 2006
Milk producers living the mountainous areas are to receive an income support of 150 Lei per cow or buffalo. The Government has
decided to allocate 68 million lei as compensatory payments to mountain producers.
There are around 760.000 cattle in the mountain areas of which 427.000 dairy animals. Milk production in these areas if often
unprofitable because of difficult production conditions and logistical problems in delivering the milk to the dairy plants.
